Crooked Fingers

by Retrograth

/

about

A true story about my relatives that got accused, interrogated and tortured for witchcraft in 1757.

lyrics

in the shadows of the forest
up at the raven hill
there are winds that whisper a rumour
and the pines remember still

a boy with muddy notions
got the girls into a ring
he called the knight of darkness
so the holy men could sing

"Shall we throw them in the water?
will they float or will they sink?"
minds of superstition
no rhyme or reason left to think

a row of crooked fingers
a memory of the cell
wounds caused by a young boy
and the rumors he would tell

if you say no, you will be guilty
if you say yes, you'll be accused
torture is the mean
cracked bones reveal the truth

and still it is not over
your blood runs through my hands
and the fingers of injustice
still cause verdicts based on spells

Big thanks to my friends in Egotrippers for the powerful man choir in the chorus. That just released a single about choices... choices like coffe, tea... or murder. open.spotify.com/album/0sNuSJ3F7wDsoy3RtRsZnE?si=cMXFF3LqQbSqjnalFqoYPg
